Other Relatives: Wizards might live longer than Muggles, it's still not long enough for Mafalda's grand-parents to still be among us. Her aunts and uncles do, though, but she doesn't have a close relationship with any of them, nor with her cousins.
Personal
Appearance: With her short blond hair in a bob, Mafalda's no-nonsense attitude reflects even in her appearance. She's more interested in looking professional than sexy, especially now that she's in her fifties and divorced. She wears minimal cosmetic and elegant but efficient robes, intent on giving the image of a witch in control of her life.

Strengths: Ambition, leadership and a dedication to her work that could be described as workaholism have helped Mafalda climb the career ladder at the Ministry. She's pragmatic, knowing that a little compromission goes further than strict ideology. She gets her way by convincing others it's also what they want, rather than butting head with them, which helps her get along with most of her employees, colleagues and superiors.

Weaknesses: Workaholic - it might help her career, but it killed her marriage. Unable to see mid-road victories, so intent on the end goal that she can't be satisfied with anything else. For all the flexibility she shows at work, she's rather set in her ways in her personal life; after Rodolphus and her ex-husband, she sworn off commitment, so she has lovers, but the relationship is purely sexual, there's not real intimacy.

Personality: Ambitious, determined, disciplined, pragmatic, discreet

Likes: Competent people, intelligent conversation, good books, chess, Quidditch, flying, sea air, sailing

Dislikes: Whiny people, lazy people, dumb people, muggles, cooking

Hobbies: Reading, Quidditch (she played during her school years but now she just watches), chess

Achievements: Her career
History
Childhood:
Mafalda Hopkirk was born at the dawn of 1951 in a pureblood family of Plymouth, Devon. Henry and Agatha Hopkirk were purebloods and proud of their heritage, but they didn't belong to the wizarding elite such as the noble house of Black or the Malfoys or the Lestranges. They would have liked to, no doubt, but money had run scarce for the Hopkirks at least a couple of generations before Mafalda came to this world. They both worked to support their growing family, little Johanna's birth coming three years after Mafalda's, Henry in a broom manufacture and Agatha as a welcome witch at St. Mungo's. They made enough Galleons to feed and dress their two daughters but not much more, and it left them always scrambling for time. It was grandma Blackburn who took care of the girls while their parents worked, a severe woman who was pragmatic and believed in self-discipline. Mafalda took after her much more than after her own parents, in the end. Of Henry and Agatha, she mostly learned that while pureblood was a matter of great pride, it didn't feed you and Galleons were something you could never have too much. It wasn't the lesson they would have wanted to teach her, most certainly, but it was how Mafalda saw things with her child's eyes, promising to herself that she would make a better life for herself than that of her parents.

School Years:
There was never any doubt that Mafalda would receive an Hogwart's letter, as she showed sign of magic at a young age. It still was cause to celebrate when said letter did come, and off Mafalda went to the wizarding school she had heard so much about. The Sorting hat recognised her latent ambition and understood that the best house to foster it was that of Salazar Slytherin. It was, from Mafalda's point of view, the best decision and she bloomed in the damp dungeons, learning to deal with her housemates' inflated egos and manoeuvering to get what she wanted. She was made prefect in her fifth year, along with Rodolphus Lestrange. The shared patrols, the meetings, the new responsibilities... it all converged to help Mafalda see her housemate in a different light as she got to know him better. Before long, she was smitten with the beautiful dark-haired heir to the Lestrange family, a situation she knew to be hopeless. She might be of pure blood, she was poor and he would never be allowed to look at her twice - at least not seriously. When he did notice her enamoured look, in sixth year, and offered some fun before he had to marry a rich and proper girl, she was pragmatic about it, swallowing her pride and taking what was offered.

Adulthood:
They left Hogwarts behind them and Mafalda entered an internship with the Ministry, determined to climb the ladder all the way to the top. Her "friends with benefits" arrangement with Rodolphus survived his engagement to Bellatrix Black, until they finally parted shortly before his wedding. It was a hard blow for Mafalda, now 22, even though she'd always known it would end this way, and she would forever hold resentment towards Bellatrix Lestrange. There was nothing to do about it though, and she threw herself in her career with renewed energy. Her hard work was paying off and she got promotion after promotion. The first war was brewing but she didn't want to be involved in it, at least not in any other way than that required by her Ministry job. When You-Know-Who was defeated by a baby on the night of Halloween 1981, she celebrated like the others, relieved that this bloody war's heavy weight was lifted off their shoulders. Her enthusiasm was killed when she learned that Rodolphus, with whom she'd lost contact since his marriage, had been caught and carted off to Azkaban with his wife and his brother. Mourning her long lost young love, she closed that chapter of her life for good.

She was in her thirties now though and her biological clock was ticking. It was then that, right on cue, she met Sean Thorpe, a colleague of her brother-in-law with whom she would eventually admit never having been in love. Yet at the time she liked him well enough and it was time to get settled and he would quite do, really. Mafalda was known for her pragmatism after all, not her romantism. They got married in 1984, but it should not surprise anyone that a marriage based on such premise didn't last. It was a conjunction of elements that led to their divorce eight years later, going from their problem to conceive a child to her workaholism, but the result remained the same: they parted ways in 1992. When the second war begun, a few years later, she couldn't help but feel a pinch at the heart when she heard that Rodolphus had escaped Azkaban, but she refused to give it any more thought. She was in the run to become Head of the Improper Use of Magic Office and she didn't want to let anything distract her, not even being impersonated by Hermione Granger for a day. The war ended the same way than the first, You-Know-Who killed - for real this time - by Harry Potter and the Death Eaters thrown in Azkaban. Things went to hell in a basket so quickly afterwards though that Mafalda was losing faith in the self-proclaimed 'good guys' abilities to govern. If there was one thing she hated, it was incompetency, and it seemed as though she was surrounded with it. She was Head of the Improper Use of Magic Office now, on the ranks to become Head of the entire DMLE, and she was fed up with the way things were going in the Ministry. It was then that Rodolphus came to find her to recruit her for this third war. He needed a no-nonsense career woman like her, a leader who wouldn't be afraid to tell the Death Eaters what they were doing wrong and how they should do it. He also needed an unmarked Death Eater in a position like hers to help infiltrate the Ministry. Considering the record of the so-called 'good guys' after both previous wars, Mafalda decided that it was time to give the other side a chance - especially if it was led by her old friend Rodolphus.

Mafalda has since been promoted to Head of the DMLE.
